Make-up removal is an important first step in skin care and consumers expect a lot from these products. Dr Kei Watanabe, who recently moved from Shiseido to become a Professor at Mukogawa Women’s University, has some effective and fascinating foam phenomena to share in our next webinar on Tuesday 11 or Wednesday 12 depending on your location.

Customers expect both cleansing performance and a refreshing after-feel, though there is a trade-off relationship here. In addition, advanced values include gentle cleansing, non dripping and easy wash off. To achieve these, a foaming make-up remover was investigated. As a result, it was found that a foam state bicontinuous microemulsion hybridized with an anionic surfactant is highly effective. Interesting phenomena relevant to the foam will be also shown in this webinar.

Dr Kei Watanabe PhD (Presenter) is now is a Professor at Mukogawa Women’s University, Cosmetic Science Laboratory, having moved from Shiseido Global Innovation Center this April. He is a member of the Japan Chemical Society Colloid and Interface Division, Japan Oil Chemists Society, Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan (SCCJ) and PhD at Yokohama National University. He received 16th, 20th, 23rd and 24th Best Paper Award from the SCCJ in 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2022; 48th, 63rd, 65th and 66th Best Paper Award of Excellence from Oil & Fat Industry Kaikan in 2005, 2020, 2022 and 2023 as well as other awards. Currently his research is focused on the self-assembly of surfactant, ultrafine emulsion, formulation technology on cleansing, and skincare products

Dr Tomoko Sekine (Guest Scientist) is an Executive Specialist at Shiseido where she started her career as a research scientist in 1993. At Shiseido she has been involved in the development of new emulsification technologies for skin care products, especially emulsions with unique textures such as multiple emulsions and Pickering emulsions. Since 2021 she has been a Member of the International Committee of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan (SCCJ). Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Japan Oil Chemists’ Society from which she received the Women Scientists Encouragement Award in 2013. She holds a BS from Waseda University’s Department of Applied Chemistry and received her PhD in colloid and interface science from Tokyo University of Science. She joined the IFSCC Praesidium in 2022 as Chair of Science.
